The Fairfield Police Department received a complaint of animal cruelty and responded to 37 Prince Street on Wednesday, Nov. 14. Officers discovered several carcasses that were believed to be canine remains.
The Fairfield Police Detective Bureau completed an arrest warrant affidavit for the crimes of animal cruelty (five counts) and first-degree criminal damage to landlord’s property by a tenant for Heidi E. Leuders on Thursday, Nov. 29.
Leuders was known for her role as the president of New Canaan-based dog rescue group Bully Breed Rescue, Inc. The five dogs whose remains were found in Leuders’ residence were believed to have been adopted to loving homes. Police instead discovered that they had been starved to death.
Leuders, who now resides at Marshall Ridge Road in New Canaan, turned herself in at Fairfield Police Headquarters on Tuesday, Jan. 15. She was charged with five counts of cruelty to animals and first-degree criminal damage to a landlord’s property by a tenant.
Leuders was released after posting a $50,000 court set bond. She is scheduled to appear in Bridgeport Superior Court on Tuesday, Jan. 29.
